As a potential solution, I offered for them to use my ACR PLB to call for help seeing as John was not responding to the paramedic and she could not determined what his condition was.
The sound of the helicopter arriving was a massive sense of relief but at the same time the vision of him being winched up heavily sedated while his family stood around in devastation is something that I'll never forget.

What I didn’t know at the time, was everything else going on in the background. 4 people playing cards get a call out, jump in the helicopter, save me and then back to playing cards. Not quite.

As the situation developed, two-way communication methods were attempted using mobile GPS or to place a phone call. Only to be met by the 'No Service' banner, scrolling across the phone screen.
