What happened?
After a successful hunt we came out of the bush around midnight to see a big truck crashed and on its side in the middle of the road with a small fire behind the cab. We parked the car to hear a guy screaming for help. I ran over to see the driver on the road with one leg missing from the knee down and the other one mangled mess.
After making a plan of attack my mate got some important kit together to leave me (emergency blankets etc) with and drove off to call for help. I activated my PLB and continued to assist the driver, I picked him up to move him away from the wreckage and fire and tied a tourniquet on each of his legs. Fuel was leaking out of the fuel tank and was running down the road past us so I picked him up again and moved him further away. Not long after the cab burst into flames engulfing the whole truck, tyres exploding, fuel tank blowing and setting surrounding trees on fire.
The PLB had notified the emergency services and the had started planning the rescue.
Words of wisdom
No matter your adventure, take a PLB with you! If it doesn’t save your life it may save someone else!!
Thank you note
Awesome work guys! We can’t thank you enough and the drivers whanau will be forever thankful.
