What happened?
On a recent ride across the rugged, rough terrain near Wairoa, New Zealand, I witnessed an accident that could have turned disastrous. While following a rider through dense grass, they hit a hidden culvert pipe that the rider failed to spot. The impact was severe enough to throw the rider from their motorcycle, causing them to land hard on the ground.
The rider was knocked unconscious for over a minute, and when they regained consciousness, it was clear they were seriously injured. A broken eye socket, a shattered jaw, a fractured hand, and several cracked ribs were apparent, but the possibility of internal injuries made the situation even more urgent. With the rugged terrain and distance from help, we were in a precarious spot. I knew immediate action was needed.
In the chaos, I quickly activated my locator beacon, ResQLink. This small device, I always carried for emergencies. Within 40 minutes, a rescue helicopter arrived at the location, much faster than anticipated. The crew assessed the rider’s condition, provided first aid, and airlifted them to a nearby hospital.
While this was happening, I took the opportunity to speak with the other 90 riders. I emphasized the importance of carrying a locator beacon, especially when riding in such remote and rugged areas. This device allowed us to get help in critical moments, potentially saving a life.
