What happened?

There were 12 motorcyclists in our group as we left from Deals Gap Motorcycle Resort onto RT 28, also known as North Carolina Moonshine 28. It was a beautiful day for riding, with perfect weather and no worries. The picture we took at the Tail of the Dragon was snapped just two hours before the accident happened.

One of the bikes, which was near the end of the group, went down on a sharp curve. The passenger was thrown from the bike and slid across the road, clearly in severe pain.

We quickly assessed the situation and several of us tried to use our cell phones to call for help, but we had no signal. To make matters worse, none of us were familiar with the area, so we had no idea exactly where we were. Fortunately, I had a ResQLink VIEW PLB on my bike. I activated it and immediately saw our coordinates displayed—it was a relief knowing that an alert for help had been sent out.

Due to the remoteness of our location, it took about 30 to 45 minutes for the first responders and ambulance to arrive. Once they reached us, they quickly assessed the injured passenger’s condition and decided she needed to be airlifted to a trauma hospital. Thankfully, despite the severity of the situation, we were relieved to learn that she would make a full recovery.

After the incident, there was a lot of talk among the group about ACR, and many riders began looking into getting one themselves for peace of mind and safety.

Thank you ACR

Drone Search Turns Dangerous: Stranded in Rugged Mountains, Dramatic PLB Rescue Ensues

I eventually found a valley that led to the coordinates but there was no obvious route down so it was necessary to explore and route find. Even the best routes down were perilous with numerous slopes of snow, dead ends, dry falls and eventually a dead end ledge overlooking a 100 ft. fall.

From Hike to Rescue Operation: Teacher's Preparedness and ResQLink PLB Saves the Day

One of the students held the PLB, and we communicated to check if the signal light was flashing. I placed emergency blankets over parent A and a couple of student jackets around him for support. I stayed with my arm supporting his neck, not moving him, suspecting he had broken his femur on one side and either his hip or femur on the other. Later, we found he had broken his femur and dislocated his hip on the opposite side.
