What happened?
We were on our 2nd day and had hiked up to Mount Luxmore and right along the mountain ridge (5 hr.) We had just past the second shelter where we had stopped to rest, eat and drink and were at the top of the stairs ready to start our decent when I suddenly became light headed, dizzy, nausea and very weak. I couldn’t stand up. I was with my Husband and tramping buddy. They moved me to the side of the track, where I was more protected from the wind. They lay me on a plastic sheet to keep me off the ground and wrapped me in a couple of sleeping bags, emergency blanket, and another plastic bag to protect me from the showers of rain coming in. We realised quickly I was unable to get myself down to the hut so they activated the Personal Locator Beacon. I had started shivering despite being all wrapped up and I was also concerned for them. It was very scary but was reassuring to know that we had a beacon and help would be on its way. we were so pleased we had emergency equipment. Without it things could have turned out very differently. The emergency services responded quickly and were wonderful at communicating with our contact person at home. They sent a helicopter up who were able to land(just) and take me and my husband off the mountain back to Te Anau. We will always carry a PLB and highly recommend to everyone else out enjoying nature.
