What happened?
A group of 7 backcountry skiers and snowboarders went on a 2 day 1 night trip to Egypt lake hut in Banff, Alberta, Canada. It was 12km and 650m of elevation gain to the hut. The tour in was long but relatively painless. On our return is where things went array. On the way in you are gaining altitude gradually over 10km or so and then drop 350m to the hut. The morning of our return the plan was the ski up the mountain that we came in on and get a couple runs in while we were returning to our cars. On the first run one of the skiers misjudged a ridge and fell off a 20’ high cliff and hit the icy ground hard. When other members of our group got to him he was bleeding from his neck and having a hard time standing. As first aid was being given it was obvious he would not be able to make the 8-9km return trip under his own strength. Two skiers of our group left quickly to get within cell phone range to contact search and rescue while I activated my beacon because we wanted to make sure this happened while it was still light out.
A hour and a half later we had a helicopter land near by on the mountain, two search and rescue members looked over the injured skier put him and his girlfriend in the Helicopter and took off for a waiting ambulance. Myself and two others still at the site of the accident left around 3pm and skied the 8-9km back to our car.
Words of wisdom
It is always better to have the tools and not need it, than to need them and not have it
Thank you note
Thank you for giving me the security to know that in the event that something goes wrong I am not alone. Thank you for helping me keep my friends safe.
