Russell still seemed coherent and able to move, so we thought we’d try to ride back slowly and reassess along the way. We didn’t get far—maybe 100 meters—before Russell stopped abruptly. He couldn’t dismount from his bike, and it was clear that something was very wrong. My wife dropped her bike and rushed to support him, while I followed suit, quickly deploying our ResQLink 400 PLB.

As we tended to Shane, trying to make him as comfortable as possible, it became apparent that his condition was worsening. His breathing was labored, and the pain was intensifying. In the isolation of the outback, where time feels slower and every minute counts, we were desperate for help to arrive.

I’ve had a few falls over the years off horses, so I knew to expect the initial pain and shock of hitting the ground, then usually you just lie for a minute or two after being winded and get back on your horse. The pain didn’t go away, only intensified, and it was agony to breathe.

I barely made the corner, and once the dust cleared, I could only see two - out of the three - riders in front, realizing someone didn't make it. I turned around to look for the rider who had missed the corner. The bike had hit a tree, and Hernan was lying about 10 m from the bike to the left. I checked on him, and he was not in good condition, complaining he could not feel his legs, and I just knew this was serious.

I hastily grabbed the mirror from my ATV, and my heart raced as I saw Bill lying unconscious, face down on the unforgiving solid granite rock, his body clearly going into shock. Desperation and fear drove me to action. I carefully cleared his mouth and nose of debris, then covered him with my military poncho. With trembling hands, I managed to contact my wife, who was familiar with the area and could reach out to rescue services and Life Flight.

As it was, the police found me at approximately 9:15pm and alerted my emergency contacts. Returning to my UTE around 10pm, I was able to make it home a bit after midnight and eat for the first time in almost 12hours.

After listening for a while, I heard heard a group come around the same section, but this time there was a really knarly skid, followed by a low pitched thud, a shriek and then silence.
