What happened?
There is nothing I enjoy more than exploring wilderness areas with my canoe, and most of the time I paddle and camp solo. I was so excited to be starting a 12 day paddling route in stunning Killarney Provincial Park in Ontario.
While setting up camp for my second night, I slipped on a rock to the shore and broke my arm. Denial and disbelief led to the realization that there was no cell reception or other people in the area, and that this was serious, I was not going to get out on my own. PLB SOS button for the win!
Within hours, an Ontario Provincial Police helicopter found me and was able to touch down right at the site. The officers were amazing! They made sure I was safe, had what I needed, and I was flown directly to the nearest hospital.
I also need to commend the communication between the OPP (the Provincial Park), and my contact person in regards to my family being informed that I was found, was okay and that they had me. Such a relief to know that all the pieces of this rescue ‘system’ from the beacon to those that came to assist, works.
Words of wisdom
Just in case plans work when you need them, always have one!
