Always take a PLB into the mountains.

Don’t assume that SAR wont be able to help you. Its pretty amazing what they can fly a helicopter in and complete 3 winching maneuvers in!

Surviving South Canyon: A Fractured Wrist, a Beacon, and a Lifesaving Helicopter Rescue

Despite being highly experienced off-trail hikers, this was one of the toughest hikes we've ever done. The initial part of the "trail," which we had to follow back to the rim the day after the incident occurred, was extremely challenging.
