What happened?
Our group of four climbers had successfully summited Mount Shuksan. It was a very long day and we were down climbing in the dark. At 1 am one of the members slipped on a hold and tumbled down a scree slope for about 50 meters, then dropped another 5 meters off a small cliff. The climber suffered a fractured vertebrae, broken ankle, concussion, and other injuries.
I initiated the beacon and we did what we could to keep the injured party warm. We spent the rest of the night trying to get some sleep. At 7:30 am runners from the Bellingham search and rescue arrived to assess the situation. At 9 am a Blackhawk helicopter arrived. The injured party was taken by helicopter to Bayview Hospital in Seattle.
Words of wisdom
Prepare for the worst and hope for the best!
Thank you note
The device worked perfectly. Prior to the rescue I’d tested the beacon as per the instructions and was impressed how quickly the email confirmation was delivered.
